Which NEC edition applies to my house?

Updated 2026-11-03 · How to find which edition of the National Electrical Code (2020, 2023 or 2026) your state or city enforces, with links to NFPA's adoption map.

The edition matters because the 220.83 math changed in 2026. Your city, county or state adopts an edition, sometimes with amendments, and that is what the inspector enforces.

Snapshot (verified against NFPA, August 3, 2026)

  • 2026 NEC in effect in 6 states (for example Colorado from 8/1/2026, Maine 7/1/2026, Massachusetts 4/24/2026, Minnesota 8/17/2026).
  • 2023 NEC in 20 states (for example California 1/1/2026 with amendments, Georgia, Kentucky, Delaware).
  • 2020 NEC in 15 states; 2017 in three; 2008 in two.
  • Some states (Arizona, Mississippi, Missouri) leave adoption to local jurisdictions.

Local amendments

Some AHJs count EV chargers at 100% in the existing-dwelling method, or require a specific worksheet. Our calculator has an "AHJ: EVSE at 100%" toggle, and the printable worksheet follows the structure of city forms such as City of Sacramento: electrical load calculation worksheet (PDF).

Common questions

Where can I check my state's NEC edition?

NFPA publishes an enforcement map with a state-by-state table. Mike Holt also keeps an adoption list. Your local building department has the final word, including local amendments.

Estimate only; a licensed electrician and your local authority having jurisdiction decide; not an engineering stamp.

Taking it to your electrician or the permit desk? The worksheet is free to print. A formatted permit-style PDF with a saved house is $9 one-time; electricians get branded PDFs, unlimited jobs and client links with Pro at $19/month.
